Iggy Azealia’s “Fancy” featuring Charli XCX paid homage to the classic ’90s comedy Clueless, right down to fuzzy pencils, but Charli XCX has long been a lover of all things ’90s (just look at her instagram), from platform shoes to “Break The Rules” shiny slip dresses.
The video’s take on high school rebellion plays up the usual clichés with a bit of cheekiness. Loose reference to Catholic school girls, a leather clad Charli singing atop a school bus covered in graffiti to a visiting a trashy lingerie store are all good fun but it’s the guest spots that win the day.
Rose McGowan stars as the chaperon -with a head full of grease- who douses the girls in a pink pepto bismol like liquid for being unruly at their prom. The real star can be found however, in the school bus driver who’s an uncanny live-action version of The Simpson’s Otto. It’s a key piece of casting that turns an ordinary moment into a hilarious wink to anyone raised in the Simpson’s golden era.
