At 22 years of age Aaliyah’s life was tragically cut short due to a plane crash in the Bahamas, in August 2001. Although her death was premature, Aaliyah left a legacy as one of the most influential artists of her generation and setting the blueprint for the future of R&B that has yet to be met. We’ve compiled the songs that made our year so much better, the happy, the sad, the insanely catchy, and the tear jerkers. Sure we could say we stuck to hipster staples The Shins and Jack White, ignoring pop ear worms by Taylor Swift and Carly Rae Jepsen, crushing on country new comer Kacey Musgraves or dancing to Escort’s disco revival but then we’d have missed out on some great tunes in 2012.
